The University’s taxonomic expertise, through the CBCREEC, has also been instrumental in identifying ecologically important and threatened species in their natural habitats. Moreover, the center regularly provides technical support to DENR in responding to queries involving confiscated wildlife requiring scientific identification and classification.
This recognition underscores the long-standing partnership between Northwestern University and the DENR, and reaffirms their shared commitment to advancing conservation efforts and sustainable management of the region’s rich biodiversity.
The program was held on the morning of July 4, 2025, at the PENRO Office in Laoag City, and was attended by various stakeholders, along with personnel from the Provincial, CENROs and field offices. The award was received on behalf of Northwestern University by CBCREEC Director, Mr. Michael Calaramo.
Northwestern University Receives Recognition from DENR-PENRO Ilocos Norte
Northwestern University, through its environmental arm—the Center for Biodiversity Conservation, Restoration Ecology, and Environmental Concerns (CBCREEC)—was recently honored by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO) Ilocos Norte for its invaluable contributions to the agency’s mission and environmental initiatives.
For over a decade, Northwestern University has been a steadfast partner in biodiversity research, playing a critical role in the documentation of plant and animal species thriving within the region’s Protected Areas. Its collaboration with DENR-PENRO has greatly supported the formulation of science-based policies and guidelines, especially in the mapping and protection of endangered species and their habitats.
