MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT (MOA) SIGNING WITH PHILIPPINE NATIVE PLANTS AND CONSERVATION SOCIETY INSTITUTE (PNPCSI)
The collaboration between Northwestern University (NWU) and the Philippine Native Plants Conservation Society, Inc. (PNPCSI) shows a strong partnership dedicated to the preservation and study of the Philippines' native flora. In November 2023, NWU hosted PNPCSI's 7th International Symposium in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, bringing together botanical experts to discuss the role of botanic gardens in ex-situ conservation and to draft the "Philippine Plant Conservation Strategies and Action Plan." This event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding the nation's plant biodiversity. University of the Philippines Los Baños Museum of Natural History.
The Northwestern University Ecotourism Park and Botanic Gardens (NUEBG) serves as a vital platform for this collaboration. Established in 2007, NUEBG houses an extensive collection of over 1,500 plant species, including many native to the Philippines. The garden's mission aligns with the goals of PNPCSI by focusing on the ex-situ and in-situ conservation of endangered native plants, promoting scientific research, and fostering environmental education. Through this partnership, both institution aims to enhance public awareness of the ecological significance of native plants and to implement policies and strategies for their conservation. By combining NWU's researches capabilities and PNPCSI's expertise in plant conservation, they are contributing to the development of comprehensive conservation plans that address the challenges faced by the Philippines' native plant species.
